CommuniTEA Infusion is a community initiative that is run out of a mobile tea van run by people with disabilities. A social innovation project of Skills Society, CommuniTEA Infusion, fosters opportunity for community connection to support the inclusion and citizenship of individuals with disabilities. The Tea Van travels to neighborhoods across our city, creating “pop-up” town squares where people interact, get to know one another, and strengthen community connections.
The 2026 season marked the Tea Van’s 11th year, a milestone celebrated with new partnerships and lively community gatherings. The Tea Van attended 15 events, ranging from small block parties of about 30 people to large community markets such as the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market, where we served hundreds of cups of iced tea. Our Community Builder’s served served thousands of cups this season, with the new raspberry lemonade flavour proving especially popular. We also established five new event connections, which came through the City of Edmonton as well as through word of mouth among small local organizations in the disability services sector.
A team of dedicated volunteers and Community Builders are at the heart of this initiative. Most of our Community Builders and drivers returned from previous years, bringing valuable experience and insight. Our season would not have been possible without our stellar and excellent team. This season, seven Community Builders and six drivers dedicated their time and energy to promoting and running the Tea Van for our community. Their passion for connecting with others kept our mission of building community alive and fulfilling! From conversations with neighbors to button making and one-on-one Jenga matches, the Tea Van has become a well-loved presence across the city.
As the season wrapped up, we held a year-end party where Community Builders received certificates, along with many thanks and best wishes. The team also reflected on the season’s highlights, and many shared how much they enjoyed travelling to events and joining in community activities. We were also proud to take part in the City’s Community Green-up events, where we helped clean up local parks.
Team Shout Outs!
We would like to recognize our Lead Community Builder, Sam, whose contributions were invaluable this season. When asked to take on the Lead Community Builder role, she said she was really excited and “couldn’t wait to get started.” From day one, Sam demonstrated outstanding leadership by greeting community members, offering drinks, and ensuring our iced tea and lemonade jugs were always full.
A special thanks also goes to volunteer drivers Karla and Mike, who got the van to the majority of events this season! Their contributions to the 2026 CommuniTEA season were remarkable and greatly appreciated.
We are proud of and grateful to our community partners, as well as everyone who continues to support and share in this initiative. We look forward to an even better 2027 season!
