New mini-documentary shares the history & legacy of The Rights We Want!

A group of people sit in two rows while a man kneels in front of them holding a video camera. Everyone but one women in the centre wears a mask.

In 1995 a group of 40 self-advocates supported by Skills Society came together to develop The Rights We Want! Statement of Our Rights & Responsibilities. Today Skills Society’s work continues to be rooted in disability rights. Part of this work is honoring the deep roots of our past, while also continuing to advocate for the citizenship and belonging of people with disabilities. In collaboration with members of the original 1995 Rights We Want! group, allies, and self-advocates from within Skills Society, we have created a mini-documentary to capture and share the history of the document and disability rights. You can view the video below!

The Rights We Want! document led to significant change both within Skills Society and in the community disability service sector as a whole. The document continues to be foundational to our work today and is an integral part of our organizational culture. It is our hope that this video will share the history and legacy of The Rights We Want! and serve as a reminder that people with disabilities have the same rights as all citizens that deserve to be respected. As we continue to build our capacity to support the citizenship and belonging of the people we serve, we remember and honor the work of those that came before us and the courage and tireless efforts of self advocates and their allies. Our sincere gratitude to all those who participated in and contributed to the creation of this mini-documentary.
